Congratulations
to the Grade 3 class who did a terrific jobleading the Mass today.  Everyone did their part very well: reading,singing, bringing up the gifts, taking part in the play about John theBaptist and the Baptism of Jesus and holding doors.
Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend the Mass and thankyou to everyone who helped children practice their parts.  Well done!

September News 

Dear Parents and Families:

Welcometo a very exciting school year.  I am looking forward to getting toknow all the students and meeting the families in my class.  I hope youfind the following information helpful.  If you have any questions orconcerns, please call me at school.  The school phone number is (705)326-3601.  Here are a few details to help your child off to a greatstart this year.  

Supplies for School

Nutritional Breaks- We have two breaks that are twenty minutes long for eating.  Foodssuch as sandwiches, fresh fruit and vegetables and cheese and crackers,yogurt, etc. are recommended.  Please check the school newsletter fordates to begin pizza and hot dogs.

Indoor shoes -Students need a pair of running shoes that can remain at school.  Theseshoes will be worn in the classroom and in the gym during Phys. Ed.  Itis does help if the shoes are easily fastened.  

Agendas- Students will receive agendas which I will check and sign daily. Please check and sign agendas daily.  I do try to send correspondencehome in the agenda pocket but you may also want to check backpacks forletters.  Important school information and dates are shared on theschool website and through school email.  Please check these sourcesregularly.  The cost of the agenda is $5.  Please send money to schoolthe first week of school.

Reading-We will begin our classroom literacy program. The students will betaking books home for reading at night or reading books at home.  Pleasesee attached letter (see below) for details of our year-long Read-OnProgram.  Some books will be self-selected based on your child'sinterests and may not be just the right reading level for your child. Please help your child with the difficult words and/or read aloud partsof the book.  Reading at home is very beneficial for your child.

READ ON

Dear Family,

READ ON is the name of our reading initiative in the primary division. This reading

initiative invites you to read daily with your child focussing on the enjoyment of reading

together. As you read, explain any new words or ideas and talk about how the story

connects to your child’s personal experiences.

Your child will bring home one or two books in his/her READ ON folder. Please sign the

reading log nightly recording the book read. This may include one book or several

pages but please only sign once per day, this includes once on Saturday and once on

Sunday. Nightly reading between 5-20 minutes has been shown to improve overall

student success.

To celebrate your child’s READ ON success, the following is a list of incentives which

we are providing:

-25 signatures, your child will receive a personalized certificate

-50 signatures, your child will be photographed on a poster holding his/her favourite book

-100 signatures, your child will receive a personalized bookmark

-150 signatures, your child will get to pick a prize out of the READ ON Treasure Box

-200 signatures, your child will be invited to enjoy ice cream sundaes with Mrs. Jackson

Poetry Recitation

Dear Parents / Guardians,

Over the next few weeks we will be preparing for our Poetry Recital.  

What is our Poetry Recital?

Studentsmust choose a poem to memorize at home and then recite it in front oftheir class.  Please no Nursery Rhymes or poems they already know.    

A copy of my poem is to be handed in to my teacher on or before:  Tue. Apr. 21

Our class recital date is: Thursday April 30, 2015

Each class will then choose some students to go on to recite their poem in front of parents in the gym.  This will take place on Tuesday May 5 .

Allstudents are expected to recite in class and on stage in the gym.  Thisactivity is a part of our final assessment of the Language - OralCommunication grade.  A copy of the rubric that will be used to assessthe students is at the bottom of this note.  

Expectations:

  • Students may choose any poem by any author
  • Students must recite the poem from memory
  • No props of costumes are to be used
  • Students are encouraged to choose a poem which they enjoy and understand
  • Students are encouraged to recite the poem using a lot of expression and appropriate       gesturing
  • Students may choose a poem from class or home - any form of poetry is acceptable
  • Please make sure that your child’s poem uses appropriate language, suitable for a school audience

January News

HappyNew Year to all families and students!  I hope everyone had a happyholiday.  We are happy to be back to our regular routines.  Thefollowing notes are for your information as we proceed into 2015!

Thursday January 15, 2015 at 9:30 - Our class will lead the school Mass in the gym.  All parents are invited to attend.

Language- All students are making progress with reading skills.  We continue todevote large blocks of time to reading instruction.  We are working onusing reading strategies such as visualizing, making connections andinferring to understand what we are reading.  The Read-Onprogram is ongoing and many students have been recognized for theirefforts at home.  Way to go!  Thank you to parents for their support.  

We are participating in the Forest of Reading, Silver Birch Express enrichment program that is for children all across Ontario.
